Digital Literacy and Ethics in Private Christian School

A disquieting syntax error is shown with a lucent glow on the screen. The NCA student sitting in front of the screen isn’t deterred. Instead, she begins to look over the code she typed for any errors, using the skills and knowledge she gained in coding class to fix the problem and make the program work as intended.

Children today are growing up in a rapidly changing world of technology. At NCA, students are taking an active part in this digital shift by learning key skills for an increasingly STEM-oriented world, from coding and video editing to engineering and design. More importantly, we also teach them to ask whether they should bring their ideas to fruition.

A Private School with Strong STEM Programs for a Tech-Integrated Future

One of our digital literacy objectives at NCA is to learn the language of computers. Classes such as beginning and advanced coding engage students in the problem-solving process of trial and error. In a world where Google and YouTube can answer any question, students increasingly need to have more than just answers to some facts. Students need to problem solve and understand the logic behind the devices that surround us to succeed.

We believe that any child growing up today could have the next big idea. At NCA, our goal is to teach students foundational skills to bring their ideas to fruition.

Timeless Ethics in a New World

We believe STEM education is about more than just learning coding and computer skills. That’s why our STEM programs also teach students about ethics, citizenship, and the language of technology.

One of our key objectives is to teach a Biblical worldview of the media we consume and create. While the devices and means with which we communicate may be new, the message is not.  Our theme verse for digital citizenship is 1 Thessalonians 5:11 - “So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.” This verse describes the positive purposes of our students using digital media.

Digital Literacy at Home and School

Growing ethical technology ambassadors is our goal. While we give our students the best possible STEM education at school, our students benefit from engaged parents at home. Here are some practical ways you can join us at home in our endeavor to promote digital literacy.

  1. Establish an acceptable home use policy. For example, you can create rules and guidelines about acceptable times and places for laptop usage to ensure your child spends their technology time meaningfully and also gains the benefits of outdoor activities.
  2. Establish some safeguards for your home. A good place to start is to look at the options with Mobicip
  3. Get familiar with resources that can help your decision making for appropriate shows and games. A good place to start is Plugged In and Common Sense Media

We not only want our students to be thinkers and innovators, but we also want them to “… do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31.
