"Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."
- Proverbs 31:28
There's no other title that I take more pride, honor, care, and joy in than the title of, 'Mama.' It may not be my easiest role in life, but it's one of God's greatest gifts to me and each Mother’s Day that comes around, not only do I get the joy of celebrating and partaking, but I also get the joy of celebrating the one who taught me so much of what I know-my very own mama. Here at Northshore Christian Academy, we want to take a beautiful opportunity to pause, give thanks, and honor the women who have nurtured us with love, patience, and sacrifice. As an adoptive mother, I also know that families can come in all shapes and sizes. For example, for our family, it's just as important for us to honor our sons' birth mama during each Mother's Day weekend. Whether it's an aunt, a grandma, a sister, a dear friend, or a mama, we believe that celebrating mothers (and mother figures) is not only a joyful tradition but also a reflection of God’s heart. Proverbs 31:30 reminds us, “a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” On this special day, I invite families to slow down, be intentional, and create memories that speak gratitude and love to the mom figures in our lives.
"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.'"
-Proverbs 31:26

Here are some of my favorite, most meaningful ways to celebrate Mother’s Day with our family each year:
Make Her Breakfast—or a Treat She Loves
Whether it’s pancakes with fresh fruit on top, a favorite morning pastry, or my personal favorite - a surprise trip to Woods Coffee for a breakfast burrito and a cold brew - surprising her with a treat she loves AND taking some of the meal planning off her plate is a fantastic way to serve any mom with kindness.
Leave Notes or Flowers in the House for Her
I love when my husband leaves me little sticky notes just reminding me how much he loves me, or when my boys color pictures and give them to me. Any kind of handwritten note, card, picture, or even flowers somewhere in the house make my day extra special and remind me how much my family treasures me.
Give Her Some Quiet Time
The mother figures in our lives all work so hard. They're often wearing multiple hats and somehow still showing up for EVERYTHING, not to mention, making it all seem so seamless. Often times the simplest gift we can give any mama out there is to give a little peace and quiet.
Spend Time Together Doing One of Her Favorite Things
Whether her love language is quality time or not, chances are high that one of the most special things you can do for her is to simply spend time with her. Whether she loves going on walks, having picnics, going shopping, or taking a ferry ride, take a moment to ask her what she would like to do and do it with her. This also creates space for meaningful conversations together and lots of laughter.
Do a Chore She Usually Handles
What’s one thing your mom often does without being asked? Maybe laundry, dishes, or tidying up the living room. Bless her by taking the initiative to get it done before she even notices. Acts of service reflect Christ’s love in a powerful way. Not to mention, yet another thing to take off of her (already busy) schedule.
Make an 'I Love You' or 'I'm Grateful Because…' Jar
Write down small notes of appreciation—telling her how much you love her, or even just daily little written down reminders of why you're grateful for her—and place them in a jar to keep at the kitchen table or on her nightstand. She can pull one out anytime she needs encouragement!
Pray Over Her
This is the most meaningful one to me because it's one of the most precious gifts you can offer any mother: prayer. Begin Mother’s Day by praying with her and praying for her—thanking God for her guidance, asking Him to bless her steps, and lifting up any needs on her heart. It’s a simple, yet powerful act that reminds her she is deeply seen, loved, and supported.

Christ calls us to honor our parents, and part of the way you can honor your mama is to also celebrate her. Mother’s Day is not just about gifts—it’s about gratitude. It’s about honoring the women who reflect Christ’s love in countless daily moments. Whether your celebration is simple or elaborate, do it with a heart full of love and appreciation.
