We are excited to share an important update about your child’s learning journey in reading and language arts. Beginning this school year, Northshore Christian Academy will be implementing Amplify ELA (Core Knowledge Language Arts – CKLA) in grades K–5. Our middle school adopted Amplify several years ago with great results, and we are now bringing this proven program into the elementary school so students will have a seamless and research-based literacy experience from kindergarten through 8th grade.
Why the Change?
Over the past several years, educators and researchers have gained clearer insight into how children learn to read most effectively. This body of research—often referred to as the Science of Reading—shows that strong literacy instruction must go beyond simply exposing students to stories and encouraging them to read. Instead, it emphasizes:
- Systematic phonics instruction that helps students build a strong foundation for decoding words.
- Explicit vocabulary and knowledge-building so students can deeply comprehend what they read.
- Practice in writing and speaking that develops clear communication and critical thinking.
As a school, we are committed to providing the very best instruction to ensure all students become confident, fluent readers who not only decode words but also understand and engage with rich, meaningful texts. Amplify ELA was chosen after careful review because it is deeply aligned with this research and equips teachers with the tools they need to support every child.
What This Means for Students
- K–2 students will receive strong, structured phonics instruction alongside interactive read-alouds that grow their vocabulary and knowledge of the world.
- 3–5 students will dive into engaging, knowledge-rich units in history, science, literature, and the arts, building both comprehension skills and a strong academic foundation.
- All students will have opportunities to discuss, write, and think critically—helping them grow as lifelong learners and effective communicators.
Why This Matters for Your Child
We believe every student deserves the best possible start in reading. Research shows that reading is not a “natural” skill—it must be taught with intentional methods. By using a curriculum grounded in the Science of Reading, we are ensuring that all students, no matter their learning style, have the support they need to flourish.
We are confident this transition will strengthen our literacy program and prepare our students not only for academic success but also for a lifelong love of learning.
Thank you for your partnership as we launch this exciting new chapter in your child’s education. In the coming weeks, we will share resources and opportunities for you to learn more about Amplify ELA and how you can support your child at home.
