Guarding a Faithful Legacy

On this Veterans Day, we here at Northshore Christian Academy wanted to take a moment to pause and honor Veterans. We are so grateful for those who have/or currently are putting their lives on the line to serve our Nation. We also wanted to take a moment to share something quite special that NCA has started implementing as a normal practice. Here, we believe that excellence isn’t just measured in things like academics or athletics—it’s woven into every flag waved and every step taken here on campus. One of the most vibrant expressions of this commitment is NCA's new Color Guard program, where both discipline and faith come together in powerful harmony.

I had the honor of getting to spend some time with Mr. Kroeze, one of our 5th-grade teachers, who spearheads this new tradition at our school. I love his heart, and our entire school's heart, behind this beautiful ceremonial act. Here is what Mr. Kroeze shared with me:

The Color Guard is a group of 3 students whose duty is to ceremoniously raise and lower the flag on our school's front lawn to its appropriate mast in accordance with orders given by President Trump and Governor Ferguson. For NCA this duty is largely performed by a select group of 5th grade students every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Having a Color Guard teaches reverence and respect for things that are sacred. As Christians, our Father has called us to pray for and show respect for our nation and the people who run it.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our school to honor our nation and, in doing so, honor our Heavenly Father. Families bringing in students have already noticed this practice as they enter the building. On more than one occasion a student from our Early Learning program has asked their mom or dad what we are doing. This allowed the parent to share the importance of respecting the flag with their child. Additionally, the students in the color guard learn what it means to serve their country (even in a small way)! Right now, Color Guard is exclusively performed by the 5th grade class. It is one of a few leadership options that they are able to choose from. There are different kids every day, and later this year a new group will have the chance to take part in this important role.

For me, I feel like it's truly an honor to take part in a ceremony as quiet, sobering, and reverent as this. Today it feels like much of the world has lost their sense of respect for serious things such as this. It is a joy to take a few students out and teach them these valuable truths!

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.--1 Timothy 2:1-4

Color Guard at Northshore Christian Academy isn’t just a ceremonial event for our students—it’s an expression of worship, a training ground for leadership, and a celebration of our Heavenly Father's love for us and our Nation. In every flag raised, students are learning to glorify God with all their heart, and to be grateful for those who have served our Country!

Our 5th Grade Leadership Color Guard represents the heart of NCA — students learning to lead with humility, honor, and service. It’s more than raising a flag; it’s about raising character. These students are modeling what it means to show respect for our country and to lead by example for others on campus.
